Bath Museum of Fashion

7th Feb 2018

On 7th February, Year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to visit Bath Fashion Museum with Mrs Butcher.  The students who went on the trip learnt about fabric embellishments and what clothes were like many years ago.  Some of the clothes were designed by a famous fashion designer, Sarah Burton.

When we arrived, we were shown around the museum.  Some of the clothes featured in the cases dated back over 400 years. Some were also modern, even from last year.

Next, we were given some paper and were told to look for examples of fabric embellishment on the clothes.  We could go back around the museum to find examples of these.  Examples of the work created can be found in the textiles room.

After, we learned about Sarah Burton and her inspiration towards designing.  Most of her work is based on nature, which is why it is so unique.  We were then told to look at images of nature.  We were given a viewfinder to select a certain place of the image to create our own off the surface embellishments.  We were given many variations of materials to create with.  Examples of the work can also be seen in the textiles room.

Later, we got to try on replicas of clothing such as hats, menswear and dresses that would have been worn in the past.  This was our favourite part of the day.

When we arrived back at school, we were asked to design our own dress using what we saw in the museum.
