Building a New School

Will the government give us the money to build a new school in Stonehouse?

Welcome to the BBC news school report coming to where you are from Maidenhill School in Stonehouse in Gloucestershire. We are presenters Joel and Oliver bringing you the story of the meeting about bidding for money to improve schools hosted by Maidenhill. On our practice day we also investigated youth crime and sport .

So here is our school report which we think proves kids know a little something about the news too. Ashley

We would like to have the £800 million for the schools in Gloucestershire as we would benefit the most from it. It would also help as our school has been around for many years and it needs a change. Or a completely new school. We have so far had a new reception and a few interior changes but we could do with so much more. We have learnt that even though many schools need the money, some need it the most and that’s us! Luke

Hi. I’m Kiera and I’m Brodie and we are reporting about £800 millions to spend on new schools. Maidenhill are trying to get a good sum of money for the schools of Gloucestershire to make the school look nice. We will benefit from this money a lot. As the school has been the same for so many years and needs change. We have a new canteen, bike shed and reception that make our school look presentable. However there’s still a lot  more to be done. We are now going to an interview with reporter Charlotte.

BBC School Report.

On Wednesday 11th March 2010, Miss Davidson’s Year 9 English group took part in BBC School Report day. The topic we chose to do for our news report is a unique event: a bid for £800 million to either improve our school in some way, or to build a whole new school. During the course of today we have interviewed Geoff Black and Jo Davidson, who are officers from the County Council, on what has been going on in our school. For this event we had about seventy people ranging from architects to builders, and headteachers from other schools. One question we asked was, “How do you think we would benefit as a school from a new building?” My personal opinion is that we would benefit greatly because this school has not been refurbished properly for many years, so a lot of this school is very old.
Today has gone extremely fast, it has been very eventful and occasionally very chaotic. We have been filming all around the school as well as having interviews. We videoed some of the old buildings as well as the new reception, new bike sheds, new sports hall, and the canteen which is being managed by a new food company.
I have gathered an opinion from Molly Newman on what she thought of today, “It’s gone very fast, it has been a good experience and we have been caught up in the moment. I liked doing the umbrella event (creating a huge M for Maidenhill with our umbrellas) as we had to be creative. I would recommend getting involved with BBC School Report, if your school has not tried it, as it’s an amazing experience.”
I also got Miss Davidson’s opinion and this is what she thought of the day, “It was fantastic to see the students behaving so responsibly and really taking over the project independently. There wasn’t too much for me to do! They were so creative and made me very proud of them.”
Overall the whole day has been a success and we will be on the BBC website in the section of BBC School Report.
